Case Studies

Problem:

All through the grammar school years M struggled and always had to work hard for her grades. She was never tested or evaluated because she always got by and was never a problem in class. M never did well on standardized tests so she frequently was assigned to Basic Skills Math or Reading class. She never benefited from the Reading classes - usually she aced them. She was given a study hall instead of her Basic Skills class when she complained that it was taking her hours and hours each night to do her homework. After doing so poorly on all her exams Freshman year her mother called the Center.

Solution:

M started this program when she was a sophomore in high school. Her weaknesses were identified and strengthened. Her parents started to see some difference pretty quickly and a little more by last semester. After a year M seems to be doing really well. She just seems to "get it" better. She has really improved in English and History and seems to study much more effectively. She will be attending Fairleigh Dickinson University in Fall 2007.

Problem:

B had experienced reading comprehension difficulties and problems focusing. He attended two different local franchise tutoring programs. They didn't work for children who may have a tough time grasping concepts. According to his mother, they were not specific to what he needed.

Solution:

The family contacted the Center and began the program at the beginning of summer. After the evaluation the parents felt that the results and interpretation were right on target. By the beginning of school in September B made much improvement. Aside from his increased confidence, B improved greatly in the areas of focusing, verbal skills and memorization. According to his parents, every component of the program helped him.

Problem:

C was stressed out and had difficulty focusing in school. He struggled through grade school and high school with dependency on special needs services. He had just started college and one of his top three problems was concentration. The teacher would start talking, he would feel lost and put his head down and go to sleep.

Solution:

C contacted the Center to see how he could be helped. School is better than last year. He looks at things differently, his attention and concentration and ability to process language has improved. He no longer gets lost during lectures in class. Overall he is functioning and learning a lot better.
