Center for Learning Enhancement: Providing Support and Solutions for Learning Difficulties

by Mary Pat Correro, Ed.M.

Now that the school year is reaching the halfway mark, your child's success or difficulty learning is more apparent. As parents, we want our children to succeed in school and may spend hours of time with them on homework daily or weekly; yet this does not seem to be enough. Perhaps you have used the school's resources to the best of your ability but to no avail. Is your child still struggling with school work and lagging behind despite the fact that he or she is receiving remedial services? Has your child gone through the appropriate channels to identify learning difficulties only to find out that he or she is not eligible, yet still is struggling and not on grade level? Both situations are daunting and leave us feeling powerless and very frustrated!

As Americans we have become consumer conscious; we hire financial advisors, lawyers and accountants to manage our important affairs. However, we fail to become consumer savvy when it comes to our most precious gifts - our children.

Professional advocacy services, as provided by the Center for Learning Enhancement, Inc. will provide you with the support you need to make a difference in your child's academic career. Advocacy services include letter writing, phone consultations, and active participation in the IDEA process including attendance at parent conferences and simplified interpretation of confusing paper work and reports. Through all, you will receive the support you need and have the questions answered that you did not know to ask.

Mr. and Mrs. P., parents whose son attends the Palmyra school district, were very pleased with the outcome of the advocacy support they received on behalf of their son. Having been told that there were no summer services available for their 6 year old son who was in the kindergarten special education class, they decided to use Mrs. Correro, Director of the Center for Learning Enhancement, Inc. as an advocate at their annual review meeting. Both Mr. and Mrs. P. were thrilled with the outcome. Their son will now receive 10 sessions of speech therapy and remedial reading services three times a week this summer thanks to Mrs. Correro's knowledge, astute observations and creative thinking! Mrs. P. said "We greatly, greatly appreciated your help. This is good news and we are very pleased."

Another parent, Mrs. L. from Evesham Township Schools followed Mrs. Correro's recommendation based on her excellent diagnostic observation. Mrs. Correro stated that "Mrs. L. found out that her son has a mild hearing loss which was not diagnosed by the school and missed by her local Child Study Team by not making a referral to an audiologist."

While we expect much from our schools and rightfully so, we may need to seek outside assistance to fill in the gaps when services are not available. While traditional special education programs seek to remediate academic lags, they don't address the specific underlying problems. Along with advocacy support the Center for Learning Enhancement, Inc. seeks to bridge this gap through a network of multi-discipline professional resources and services to include cognitive training and academic remedial instruction, using scientifically based programs as Bridges Learning System, PACE, Master the Code, Lindamood-Bell Processes and Wilson Reading System.
